In the past, the UAE was not a popular choice for expats to relocate to. But in 2021, the UAE changed its laws and made it easier for people to get citizenship. This has made the UAE a more attractive place to live and work.
Before 2021, the UAE only gave citizenship to a few people, such as:
- People from other countries who have lived in the UAE for at least 30 years and can speak Arabic fluently. (This also requires them to give up their citizenship from any other country.)
- Women who are not citizens of the UAE but have been married to a UAE citizen for at least seven years.
- Foreigners who have received a UAE passport in recognition of their good deeds from one of the leaders of the Emirates.
Who can become a UAE citizen?
- Have worked as a researcher for at least 10 years.
- Have 10 years of professional and academic experience.
- Get a letter of recommendation from a well-known university.
- Win at least one international award for your work on a significant scholarship or research grant in the past 10 years.
Creative individuals:
- Have won at least one international award for their achievements.
- Get a letter of recommendation from a government agency in their field.
- Be innovative in their field.
- Have at least one patented invention.

- Have at least 10 years of experience.
- Be specialized in a unique scientific field that is needed in the UAE.

Inventors:
- Have at least one patent that has been approved by the UAE Ministry of Economy or another well-known international organization.

Investors:

To Apply for UAE citizenship, you will need to:
Although there are no established procedures regarding the application process yet, there are some criteria to sort out the eligible candidates.
Step 1: Reviewing
Step 2: Pre-Approval
If a candidate's application is found to meet all the criteria, it is nominated by the sub-committees in accordance with the categories.
Step 3: Approval
After the application is approved, it is sent to the advisory committee, which has one representative from each emirate, for a final decision.
The process of getting UAE citizenship is more complex than it seems. Even if you meet all the requirements, you may not be granted citizenship. The final decision is made by the Executive Council, the Rulers, the Crown Princes' Courts, and the Cabinet.
